Municipal Theater of Piraeus

7607

The construction of Municipal Theater of Piraeus, which is located in Korai Square, began in 1884 and was completed in 1895 based on designs by Ioannis Lazarimos. The arrangement of the faces is a combination of French and German elements of Classicism. It is a mass that is completely symmetrical to the main axes, with varied growth in height, due to the significant inclination of the ground. The facade is predominated by the imposing temple-shaped gateway, with the smooth Corinthian columns and the pediment finial, referring to European standards, such as the Munich Opera. The ground floor sections are predominated by carved stonework and arched openings of Renaissance style.
The theater square is formed like a horseshoe-shaped auditorium and is housed in a curved false ceiling. It is surrounded by a circumferential external corridor, while two stairways lead to the first floor and the foyer. The stage even reaches the elevation of the housetop. The theater has three rows of balconies with loges and a gallery. Occasionally, the building also hosts events other than theatrical.
