IONIO Hospital

7684

It is a three-story building with obvious influences from Neoclassicism. The facade is divided according to the tripartite organization in base, main body and crown. The external surface of the ground floor is constructed with Piraeus stone (Aktitis) in the form of isodomic masonry, a morphology format that is in contrast to the upper floors, which bear coatings. The face is divided into three parts and in a vertical manner, as the central part partially protrudes. The outer surface of the first floor is decorated with horizontal architrave beads in the plaster, opposite to the format of the second floor. At the corner edges of the second floor, ribbed pilasters with a ceramic impost are formed. On the facade, the two outermost openings of the first floor bear small balconies with curvilinear balustrades, which are decorated with floral motifs. Similar is the design of the balustrade on the elongated balcony of the second floor, which rests on ornate marble corbels. The openings to the floors are surrounded by casings. In particular, on the second floor they are crowned with an architrave with pediment finial, while the frames have wooden French shutters. An entablature with bands and decorative dentils adorns the edge of the building. The projecting roof eave bears ceramic antefixes. The aesthetics that characterizes the architectural morphological vocabulary of the building’s facade caused it to be hypothetically attributed to the architect Ernst Ziller.
