5th Nursery School, also known as Nikolaos Frantzis Residence

The three-story corner building with the semi-circular edge at the intersection of Bouboulinas and Kountouriotou Streets is also known as the former Nikolaos Frantzis Residence. It was built around the end of the 1880s and constitutes a special architectural type of residence. The idea of the semicircular corner format clearly refers to the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates (335-334 BC). The building no longer exists, however old photographs provide relevant documentation. The circular rotunda influenced many buildings of the time, reaching results of incredible elegance, such as the well-known Frisira Residence in Plaka by the architect Ernst Ziller. The building previously and for a short time housed the Maritime Museum of Greece, while today it houses the 5th Nursery School of Piraeus. Its faces display typical neoclassical elements, such as the presence of architrave beads in the plaster that imitates the isodomic masonry, the pilasters with imposts topped with bands and cornices that frame the openings, the elongated decorative dentils and the parapet with piers and balustrades that adorn the building’s roof edge.
