Archaeological Museum of Piraeus and archaeological site

The Archaeological Museum of Piraeus was founded in 1966 as an extension of the old one and opened its doors to the public in 1981. It is housed in a two-story building, which flanks the Hellenistic Theater of Zea on the west and south sides. Its exhibition spaces occupy the ten rooms of the two floors, while the antiquities conservation laboratories and the museum’s warehouse are located in the basement. The building of the old museum is currently used as a sculpture warehouse, while an open-air exhibition operates in the archaeological site of the Theater of Zea /courtyard of the Museum. The main task of the museum is the collection, preservation, recording and safekeeping of old and new finds, which come from the wider area of Piraeus. Its activities include the organization of educational programs, lectures and other cultural events, as well as the gradual improvement of the building’s infrastructure to better serve visitors.
