Building at 119 Filonos Street

7668

The “Potoglou Mansion” in Troumba, owned by the heirs of Michail Potoglou, was built in the block of 119 Filonos, 116 Notara and Skouze Streets around the mid-1930s. It is one of the first multi-story buildings in Piraeus with faces on all three streets. The morphology of the faces refers to eclectic elements, very typical of the interwar period. The openings are arranged rhythmically without perimeter frames, while a very characteristic element is the alternating placement of the balconies on the three floors, which carry remarkable metal railings and are emphasized with decorative corbels of simple style, as well as the horizontal edge of the roof featuring a protruding cornice and false caissons. The premises of the building used to house merchant offices, companies, shops, cabarets and four-room residences, while the “Chicago” hotel and the Administrative Headquarters of the Germans in Piraeus were also located here in the building (1941-1945).
