The plan of the Central Municipal Market of Piraeus is an architectural proposal of the engineer I. Trigetas. It was applied on March 18, 1862 in the triangle between the streets Gounari – Ethnikis Antistaseos – Vasileos Georgiou B’ Avenue, opposite the big church of Agia Triada. The layout of the buildings was perfectly symmetrical with respect to the two vertical axes of the complex, while initially there were only two entrances-galleries. The plan also included facilities for buildings of various services, such as coffee shops, barbershops, auto body shops, etc. In the period 1862-1863 the construction of the market was completed. At the same time, the sewerage network of the market was completed, the sidewalks were formed, the passages were paved and the construction of the large shelter on the coastal side began. In 1864 the construction of the shelter and the fountain on the main atrium of the building was completed. In 1875 doors were opened east and west, while in 1881 all common areas were paved. The Municipal Market was hit by a fire on January 2, 1921, resulting in several shops being severely damaged and others being completely destroyed. The Municipal Market was permanently closed on February 10, 1969, following a decision of the Municipality of Piraeus, during the mayoralty of A. Skylitsis. Today, at this spot looms the Commercial Tower of Piraeus.
