The Mariners’ Retirement Fund (N.A.T) is the main social protection institution for Greek sailors. The N.A.T is the first Social Security Organization established in Greece. The House of the Mariners’ Retirement Fund at the junction of 1 Ethnikis Antistaseos and Miaouli Coast Streets (next to the Central Municipal Market of the city and opposite the Piraeus Clock Tower) was built based on the plans of the architect Nikolaos Zoumboulidis (1888-1969). It is noted that Zoumboulidis designed the most important buildings of the Bank of Greece and of the National Bank in Thessaloniki, Serres, Drama, Florina, Preveza, Lamia and Nafplio. The building is developed on four floors with a semi-basement and a basement, while the morphology of the faces belongs to the late Classicism. The rigor of the exterior surfaces combines different classical architectural styles, such as carved stonework on the ground floor, Doric columns with Corinthian imposts on the faces and classical style dimensions on the gables.
