P. Patsiadis Residences

7720

In 1875 the German architect Ernst Ziller built a district of luxurious mansions in the Kastella area. The project was completed in 1877 and became known as “Ziller District” or otherwise “Mansion District”. Of these houses on the eastern side of the estate, only the house of the flour manufacturer Panagiotis Patsiadis is preserved. The two Patsiadis residences were built in Alexandras Square, in Zea. The first – to the west – was demolished in the early 1970s and a multi-story apartment building was erected in its place, while the second, an impressive two-story corner building, is preserved to this day and is organically integrated into the curved front of the street. The building in question stands out with the characteristic arched openings on the ground and upper floors, the circular tower-shaped staircase with the conical pointed tip, the elaborately carved balconies and the rest of the architectural morphological elements of the external decoration. The ground floor was intended for commercial exploitation, while the first floor was intended for residence.
