Sparta Hotel

7636

It is a two-storey neoclassical building (with an attic), which housed the French Embassy during the decades 1850-1890 and later on the Admiralty of the Greek Navy. From the 1910s until today it operates as a hotel, under the name “Sparti”. The morphology of the faces is characterized by symmetry. In the areas of the ground floor, which functioned as shops, openings with a semicircular ending are formed. On the central axis of each face on the first floor, balconies with marble corbels and metal railings are formed. The corner edge throughout the height of the building is decorated with architrave beads in the plaster, imitating the technique of building with stones according to the pseudoisodomic masonry system. Openings of the first floor are equipped with French wooden shutters. On the roof there is a peripheral protective parapet with low pillars, while in the middle of the face towards Kapodistriou Street, an attic of small coverage with a pediment finial has been built, probably a subsequent addition.
