The building at 36 2nd Merarchias Avenue and Moutsopoulou Coast is known as “Strigos Mansion”, as it was purchased in 1917 by the merchant/banker/politician Georgios Strigos (1878-1956). The Strigos Mansion is spread over two floors and the exterior design of the faces clearly refers to Neoclassicism. A projecting cornice with bands and moldings at floor level separates the ground floor from the first floor. The openings bear pediment finials and wooden French shutters. The top of the building is crowned with a pediment with entablature, while the edge of the roof plate is covered by antefixes. The face towards the Moutsopoulou Coast is quite distinctive, as a marble inscription is incorporated into the parapet of the building, flanked on either side by two statues. Balustrades make up the parapet, alternating with piers. During the war, the building was requisitioned by the Germans and was used as an Officers’ Club, while in 1950 it became the headquarters of the French Institute of Piraeus. In 1964 the Strigos Mansion was depicted by Yiannis Tsarouchis in the painting titled “Strigos Residence in Piraeus”. In 2006 it was bought by the Laskaridis family and since 2009 it houses the Historical Library of the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation and the Maritime Collection of the Foundation.
