Archaeological Site of the former Courthouse

7675

During the construction work of the Piraeus Courthouse in 1980, in Rontiri Square of the Terpsithea district, remains of a residential block were found, dating from the Late Classical to Byzantine times. Three of the four houses of the Hippodamian block and the narrow streets (2 and 3 m wide) that surrounded it to the North and South were revealed. Two Roman houses with a central peristyle courtyard or atrium were discovered in the center of the plot. The excavation of the Courthouse yielded interesting finds: coins, clay vessels, a series of weighing and measuring instruments (marble and lead weights), two ” sikomata ” (liquid volume measurement system made of stone or marble slabs with carved cavities) and inscriptions, most importantly, an agoranomic text of the 1st century B.C.
