Ilias Kanettis Mansion

7665

The five-story building at the corner of Iroon Polytechniou Avenue and Sotiros Dios Street was built at the beginning of the 20th century. It is referred to as the Kanettis Mansion, as it was built by Ilias Kanettis, a shopkeeper, while in the past it was also known as “the building with the dome”, due to the vaulted roof created by the circular angular end. The building displays morphological characteristics of the interwar period. The design of the faces features a number of eclectic elements, such as the arched endings of the openings, the elongated false parapets that go across the full height of the faces full with geometric motifs and the decorative supporting beams of the cornice. After the war and the Occupation, the business of Ilias Kanettis ceased to exist. The “Soldier’s Home” of the Piraeus Guard was housed in the Mansion, later on the election center of Sophocles Venizelos and Nikolaos Plastiras operated there, while from 1960 to 1997 the Mansion functioned as a commercial store (Ethymiadis, Dragona, Akron Ilion Krystal). Since then, the Kanettis Mansion remained closed and unused for some years.
