Ionideios School (Boys’ Primary School and the Greek School) in Korai Square

7713

This is the 1st school complex in Piraeus, which was built with the donation of Konstantinos Ionidis and included a two-story and a ground-floor building. The Greek School was installed in the two-story building, having three classrooms on the ground floor and a large hall on the first floor. The 1st Boys’ Primary School was located perpendicular to the first building. Older photographic archive material allows partial documentation of the two-story Greek School, which developed in a rectangular plan, and on the faces of which there were simple geometric elements of horizontal bands and elongated cornices with bands also on the roof crown, while the symmetrical arrangement of the three arched openings of semi-covered space at the entrance of the ground floor, is very characteristic. The school complex was demolished in 1932 and no more relevant information about the architectural layout of the building units survives. A new building was founded in this place, which was renamed the Piraeus Secondary School and in 1963 the Ionideios Standard School.
