School of Engineering “Archimedes”

The School of Engineering “Archimedes” was founded in 1933 by the ” Archimedes Educational Association of Scientists and Engineers “, with the aim of providing technical and professional training to working young people. It is a four-story building with morphological elements that refer to the urban architecture of the end of the 19th century. The three floors (ground floor and two additional floors) stand on 2nd Merarchias Avenue Street, while part of the building is occupied by additional spaces – a later addition, so that from Praxitelous Street it appears as four floors. The main face, with its tripartite organization of base, main body and crown is very typical. A similar division into three sections is also observed on a vertical level, where a large part of the two sides partially protrudes. Impressive feature constitutes the main entrance with the marble frame, which is decorated on both sides by pilasters with elaborate imposts and architrave with cornices and decorative dentils. The external surface of the facade on the ground floor appears to have architrave beads in the plaster imitating the isodomic construction. The vertical edges of the central projecting part are formed with piers. The openings on both sides are surrounded by simple pilasters and bear wooden French shutters. The balconies are of great interest, as on the first floor and on either side of the main entrance, there are two small balconies supported on simple beams, framed with cast iron railings with winged vultures, in contrast to the elongated balcony of the second floor, which rests on marble corbels and has metal railings with Art Deco motifs. A long balcony also traverses the second floor, facing Praxitelous Street.
